SSVP

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, often abbreviated as SSVP, is an international Catholic voluntary organization dedicated to serving the poor and disadvantaged. Founded in 1833 by a group of young laymen led by Frédéric Ozanam, the organization has grown to operate in over 150 countries, providing various forms of assistance to those in need.

The name "Society of Saint Vincent de Paul" was chosen to honor the French saint known for his charitable work and dedication to the poor. Saint Vincent de Paul, who lived in the 17th century, had established various social welfare initiatives, including hospitals, orphanages, and shelters.

The Society emerged during a time of great social upheaval in France. The industrial revolution had brought about significant economic changes, leading to widespread poverty and suffering. Frédéric Ozanam, a 20-year-old student at the Sorbonne University in Paris, was deeply moved by the plight of the poor. Together with six of his friends, he decided to take direct action by visiting and assisting impoverished families in their homes.
